Tunnel Views Art Postcards
These new art cards, or 3-D paper sculptures, are inspired by an interesting historical bookform called tunnel books. Early versions of tunnel books were perspective theatres or optical boxes with movable panels that portrayed entertaining scenes. Traveling showmen often carried these boxes around on their backs and charged a small sum to look inside as he changed the scenes. The term tunnel book was first used when a commemorative novelty theatre was created for the opening of the Thames Tunnel and the Great Exhibition in London in the 1850's. Since then, other remarkable commemorations have been created, establishing the form. In recent years, the tunnel book has been taken up by modern book artists to express their own individual visions and stories.
My Tunnel Views Art Cards are elegantly refined forms with special thoughts handset and hotstamped in gold on the front. The windows tunnel back through several layers, using concertina supports, to an original focal photo or embellishment. They are meant to stand on a desk or shelf, preferably around eye-level, and to charm the viewer in a unique and captivating way.
Each card is designed, individually assembled and cut out by hand. Normally, because of the time involved, little books or cards like this would be made in a limited edition or in only a few copies. I love making them so much and have so many ideas to pursue with them, that I am working on my production methods to make them in affordable, larger editions while maintaining endless variety and handmade quality.
Each card presses flat, comes with an elegant black envelope, and can be mailed easily. Blank space for writing a personal message on back. $18 each.
